Downer’s Rail division has over 100 years’ experience and is the leading provider and maintainer of passenger and freight rolling stock in Australia.  The division continues to supply approximately 60 per cent of the active mainline locomotive fleet in Australia.

In Australia, Downer Rail operates three engineering design centres, four manufacturing plants and over 20 maintenance facilities.

The division’s customers include both State Government passenger rail operators and private sector freight rail organisations. In the public sector, key customers include RailCorp New South Wales, Queensland Rail, V/Line and the Public Transport Authority of Western Australia. Long-term private sector customers include Pacific National, QR National, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Genesee & Wyoming Australia and SCT Logistics.

Over the past 15 years, Downer Rail has tailored its product and service offering to meet changing market dynamics. It has moved from being primarily a project-based rolling stock supplier to providing whole-of-life asset management solutions to our customers with a focus on Zero Harm.

Downer Rail maintains over 30 per cent of the national locomotive fleet in Australia, with over 50 per cent maintained in-house by customers.

The division’s broad range of capabilities and expertise includes passenger cars, locomotives, freight wagons, and light rail and is complemented by the below rail capabilities of Downer Works’ Rail division.
